Fiction Friday - Razor Thin Slices

"Razor thin slices of root beer."

What? Listen, Imagination, you know I love you, but what the Hell am I supposed to do with that?

If you're going to be difficult, I'm going to start leaving you at home....

Okay, hang on... I think I see something...

Fiction Friday

The beautiful writer, Fern Kali, has her own blog, and she posts some really wonderful fiction, and she is a creative story-teller, who brings real life to her creations.

Through a bit of a semantic quirk, let's say Fern and I have jointly "created" Fiction Friday - the idea is post something creative - a character, a game mechanic, or - best of all - a story of some kind.  Even just a couple pages, or a scene from a longer piece, or whatever.  Something with a story, or story hook, that people can relax too, and have a bit of fun.

Razor Thin...

So, here's my outline.  Classic dystopian future - think Blade Runner (the original, with it's crappy budget) - where there is resource scarcity.  There's a weird minimalism to the economy - no one starves, which keeps crime down - but getting "ahead" is a real bitch.

...Slices of Root Beer

In our modern world, sugar cane is dirt cheap, and loaded into everything as a highly addictive substance.  But, in a dystopian future, where fertile ground for growing healthy crops might be hard to come by, and very nearly everything is synthetic, then something as simple as real root beer becomes a luxury.

Those who have "pleased their masters" might be rewarded with a razor thin slice of root beer - the genuine flavor and real sugar would be hyped as a real prize (and given resource scarcity, might be valued like gold).

I mean, look at gold - except for a few industrial uses, it's mostly just pretty.  People value it primarily because it's 1) pretty, 2) scarce.  If everyone could find gold in the streets, all the time, then everyone would treat it slightly better than lead, right?  Lead not being as pretty, and having the additional side effect of being toxic, but you know what I mean.

People value things that are scarce, especially if the beautiful or privileged people value the same thing.  I mean, Shark Fins as a delicacy?  Caviar?  Beaver tail? Seriously?  As far as I'm concerned, taste like shit, but they're scarce, thus expensive, and therefore people value them.

Therefore - in this dystopian, resource scarce world, filled with disposable humans as common labor  - cogs in the wheel, where middle management delude themselves into believing they have importance by tormenting those beneath them - absurd pleasures become valued treasures.

Razor Thin Slices of Root Beer

It's Fiction Friday, luv, come join in :-)

January 20, 2017 - a day of mourning for human decency

The brilliant Jonah Perkins wordsmithed so eloquently, I stare doe-eyed at his awesomeness, and had to capture it here, to make sure the words could be referenced time again and again and fucking time again(!)

The inauguration of a US president is normally a moment of great hope. It is a celebration of representative democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. It is an affirmation that the ideals and laws set out in the 1789 US constitution, still a global paradigm for modern-day governance, continue to be honoured and observed. Inauguration confers legitimacy on a head of state in the name of “we, the people”. The incumbent has a duty to respect and uphold the constitution’s central aims, namely “to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty”.

The inauguration this Friday of Donald Trump as 45th US president is not a normal moment. Nor for the majority of Americans who did not vote for him, and countless onlookers around the globe, is it a moment of hope. Rather, Trump’s ascent to what is commonly termed the world’s most powerful job is a moment of dread, anxiety and great foreboding. We said, after he won the Republican nomination last summer, that Trump has shown himself unfit to be president. His often-demonstrated ignorance, racial bigotry, misogyny, untruthfulness, hostility to free speech, crude bullying and dangerous, rabble-rousing nationalism utterly disqualify him.

Nothing has occurred since Trump narrowly won last November’s election, despite polling nearly three million fewer votes than the Democrats’ Hillary Clinton, to alter this unhappy conclusion. The president-elect’s press conference last week failed to justify hopes that the imminent, awesome responsibilities of office would moderate his reckless behaviour. In a matter of minutes, he slandered America’s intelligence agencies, threatened Mexico, vowed again to build a border wall, pistol-whipped US businesses that invest abroad, took a wrecking ball to Obamacare, pilloried unfavoured news organisations, and boasted about a shady $2bn business deal. This is not the behaviour of a president.

Although only days away from the Oval Office, Trump continues to blurt out half-baked opinions on sensitive issues, like a bar-room boor. He appears not to think before he opens his mouth or his Twitter account. And what pops out is usually offensive, inflammatory or inaccurate, exemplified by last week’s insulting of Meryl Streep. Hopefully, speechwriters more sensible than he will craft his inaugural address. Friday’s ceremony is a momentous occasion. It will be watched around the world. It is a showcase for America. Yet Trump is an embarrassment. His elevation is a national humiliation.

Few will enjoy this gross spectacle more than Vladimir Putin, Russia’s messianic president, and his plausibly deniable teams of cyberhackers, conspirators, fake newsmen and skilled muddiers of pools. Russia’s election interference on Trump’s behalf, publicly certified by the Obama administration and all the US intelligence agencies, has cast a dark shadow. The release last week of an unverified dossier alleging Russian contacts with Trump’s campaign staff and the gathering of blackmail material against him has intensified fears that Moscow is still trying, directly or indirectly, to manipulate the president-elect, by exploiting his inexperience, vanity and naive view of Putin.

(And to any and all - please drop reference links in the Comments below - I want the reality of this monster  - this "President Trump" - to be remembered forever, and to be a big hammer hitting the heads of his worshipers every damn day.)

Fiction Friday: Horror, Kink, or Both?

Long time readers know that humans fascinate me.  From the amazing highs and despicable lows, to the quirky and the just plain weird (and weirder).  So, no surprise this image pops up here, right?

(I have no idea where this came from,
but memo to self: never, ever, ever - no really, not ever Google "American Horror Story" again!)

I could actually see that being a real woman, and a real scene from some kind of movie. Either real horror, or real kink. I mean, lots of people have disfiguring injuries these days, and so many filmmakers need content, there are lots of opportunities for unusual body types.

Well, that and lots of people are into weird shit. I mean, there is an actual fetish/mental disorder associated with sexual attraction to having body parts removed. So, Hell, that could be a real woman acting in a niche Internet film.

Hell, the background even reminds me of "SAW" (I've seen still photos, because, you know, I'm insane enough to have Googled "SAW").

Anyway, since this is a #FictionFriday post, what derangement do you see?

You know I love you, but I gotta cut back on digital stimulants

I NEED to unplug. I don't know which I fear more: being doxxed while offline and defenseless, or simply being forgotten.

I think I've just nailed why I MUST unplug.  I think the word I'm looking for is "addiction," and that ain't healthy.

I have been thinking about this for a long time, it's just that this week, something finally snapped, and so I'm actually going to do it.

I'm losing my edge. I just had an argument with a sub-par troll, and when asked why, I didn't really know the answer. I got something out of the pointless exchange, but I can't even put my finger on what.

You guys are my secret community. No one in the meat world crosses over to this life. I can say anything here, and feel some measure of insulation from everyday concerns. Here, with you, I don't have to hold back. Here, I'm about as unbridled and free as I can ever be.

I love you all. I love entertaining you and being entertained by you. I love sharing energy, thoughts, words and experiences with you.  I love seeing what you're going to give a crap about next, what winds you up, what makes you happy.  You've become part of me, and that means a lot to me.

Friday night is when I usually go offline. This time I'm going to have my password changed by the one person I trust. He has orders not to release it for at least two weeks.  I bet after two weeks without my therapy community (you guys), he'll force my password on me, just because he'll get tired of listening to all the noise in my head.  That's both sad and funny at the same time.

Between the three blogs, I'm dumping out a lot of energy. Five-a-week is actually easy for me to produce content, because I have a lot of mental energy, and the blogs are a great release of energy, but I need that energy for other things right now.

I need to pass some tough exams to advance from a job to a career, so I need the energy to study.

After that, I've got some pure fiction projects I want to polish to enter some competitions, but made myself promise to wait until the exams are done.

Keep visiting this site to see what new material spills forth! I've got the autoblog queued up to post very-nearly every day from now into June.

(I don't know the model's name; she's on Snorg Tees, so go click about and see for yourself. :)

I leave you with one final thought:

I love you all! Wish me luck! Remember me!

Batting 25 000!! - HOLY TOLEDO!

I'm really super-flattered that people around the world are finding things to enjoy on my blog.  It does remind me that I should lighten up a bit, and diversify with the Musical Monday and Fiction Friday themes, as well as bitching about politics, philosophy and just fucking stupidity all the time. (Although, people seem to like best the posts where I bitch, so I don't know.)

You guys love me sooooo much!

Fiction Friday - Guys Love Boob Armor

There is no escaping it. Guys love boob armor. It's become an iconic staple of, well, everything.  But, the reality is that boob armor is terrible about blocking swords and things.  And, women can still be totally sexy in useful armor.  Women may not be built for the same upper body strength as men, but we can be just as quick and deadly.  Besides, the lower center of gravity means we're less likely to fall over when swinging that big mace, right?

Here is a great vid which discusses historical armor, and why the chainmail bikini is silly, even if it is sexy.

And, just to update the modern fantasy legend, here are some more great examples of totally silly boob armor.

I've heard from a couple of sources that the original Star Wars stormtroopers had a lot of women in those costumes - that Lucas was literally putting anybody in the armor, to have enough extras stomping around.  Good for him. Chicks rule.

Okay, that last one does actually look even sillier than the previous examples. At least with the bare midriff, their wearing the lampshade of "sex sells."  Then again, this last model really highlights the absurdity of boob armor.

Fictional Friday: 5e Shield Spell - don't fall for the trap!

Maybe I'm still a bit old school (3e being old, right?), but this thing with the shield spell lasting only until the start of my next turn is total crap.

I really loathed that change in 4e, where at least by burning my daily powers and magic objects, I could drag the duration out to a massive 3 turns. Wheeee.

In 5e, it's the same crap, only now it teases me by letting me burn my limited spell slots, so instead of knowing I've got only one use, so I use it carefully and wait for the right moment, now I'm seduced into burning my precious resources thinking "Oh, this one time is surely important, and I've got plenty of spell slots." Uh-huh. And suddenly my high level spellcaster has blown 1/4 of her spell slots in only a few rounds on a not-actually-guaranteed-to-matter last-ditch defense.

Spell shield

I mean, seriously. Spell slots are the lifeblood of spellcasters, so I'd at least like that stupid shield to have a duration of "one minute (concentration)." Then I'd feel like I got some payoff, instead of a "Hey, here's hoping my three-second force field will work!"

Fairs-fair, in 5e, that +5 AC is HUGE, where a 20th-level Fighter might muster a +16 attack bonus, if really smart about tactics and manages to acquire a legendary +3 weapon. Still, burning a spell slot feels like a high price for the one-shot "saving throw against swords."

Am I overthinking this? Is the "until start of your next turn" a reasonable exchange for a 1st-level spell slot?

Fictional Friday: Power Word Pointless

Why are the spells Power Word Stun and Power Word Kill Enchantment spells?

Why are Enchantment spells linked to hit points?

Does anyone even use the spells any more?  I mean, seriously, starting with 3e, and continuing into 4e and even worse with 5e, what CR20 monster has less than 100 hit points? And if your party has managed to smash it down to under 100 hit points anyway, why waste a 9th-level spell on it? And how are you supposed to know when it's under 100 hit points, anyway?

I mean the CR 21 dragon has 267 hit points, the CR 20 pit fiend has 300, the CR 15 purple worm has 167 and the frickin' CR 5 hill giant has 101.

"Hey, you know, now that the fighter has hit the stock, classless, non-advanced, henchman hill giant with the javalin, I'll pop off my 9th-level instant death spell, because now I know it won't be wasted."

Bleah.

And Power Word Heal is just a really tightly focused, and super-convenient, video game-inspired wish.

Has anyone ever really used the Power Word spells, or do these just keep getting dragged forward as one of those legacy things that just has to be there, or purists will bitch up a storm?

Fiction Friday - Aberrant Dino-Woman

Morrigan Viivi Donaghue

Background & Origin: She was born in the Netherlands, and abandoned during childhood. She grew up a ward of the state. She has been on your own for as long as she can remember. As far as she knows, she is an only child. She has not been able to locate her parents, or any relatives at all.

She has experienced the following important events:

  • A beloved pet died, leaving her grief-stricken;
  • A long-term relationship ended when her partner broke up with her without reason;
  • Exposure to a disease-laden environment toughened her immune system.
  • She fell in love and thought about marriage. Her thoughts become reality and she got hitched;
  • Word of her deeds spreads, and she gained fame or notoriety.

Combat Tactics: She transforms to a velociraptor, with larger (more useful) forearms, and fights viciously.

Personality Traits: She has a mental disorder in that she is convinced her powers derive from the magical powers of her facial tattoo, and nothing can convince her otherwise. If the tattooed is somehow destroyed, she probably will mental block and be unable to use her powers.

Appearance:  She has short, braided hair. She favors clothing that blends with the local styles, changing at need.

Powers: Like all novas, she has a special lump of tissue in her brain that allows her to collect, channel and manipulate quantum energies in science fiction-like ways.  This typically manifests as a kind of self-image.  In her case, she can transform into reptile and dinosaur forms.

Fiction Friday - A Snark About Herbert's Dune Novels

If you haven't read Frank Herbert's original Dune trilogy, you should.  All kinds of commentary on human nature, big sweeping epic story, blah, blah. One of my favorite parts is that the characters are - literally - all geniuses, and they act like it. Lots of deep character interaction, but very few stupid mistakes like "Well, if only you had said what you meant, I wouldn't have jumped to the wrong conclusion." I hate stupid mistakes. When these people fuck things up, it's because they did it with purpose.

A core premise of the books is that Paul Atreides becomes god-leader of an army of mega-genius ninja women.

Alas, I always took the "man leading the powerful women" as the classic male fantasy of a harem of strong, powerful, smart, deadly, dutiful, pliant and obedient women.

I wanted to enjoy the simple juxtaposition and irony of a thousand generation breeding program getting flipped on its head at 999, and finally completely torqued at 1000 (and ultimately wrong, since Duncan Idaho is the real kwisatz haderach  like 25 000 years later still), but ... yeah.

I guess, really, as long as humans are involved, there would have been a no-win for Herbert on gender-roles, but in fairness, I think he balanced things really well by having strong characters, epic dramas, and largely ignoring gender entirely by making the real enemy always something internalized like  "survival against nature, survival against betrayal, etc., etc."

It was his son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson who screwed it all up later by making these deep, complex thinkers into a bunch of romance-novel dumbfuck-mistake drama queens.

Fiction Friday - Exalted Celtic Brawler

There's sword on your right. One of my fav 3e characters was a fighter/monk with a feat that made her bastard sword into a monk weapon. Delightful blend of swashbuckling and Celtic brawler mayhem.

3e monks benefited from single-classing almost more than even the spellcasters, so there was always that frustration, but it was worth it.

(model unknown)

Here it is. The Feat, I mean. It was a special one-off by the GM, because she liked that I had a not-anything-optimized concept and wanted to run with it.

Bastard Monk Weapon

Pre-reqs: Str 15+, Dex 15+, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword), Weapon Focus (bastard sword)
Benefits: The character can treat a bastard sword as a monk unarmed attack, substituting “bastard sword” anywhere it says “monk unarmed attack.”

The “unarmed attack” part was originally a misspeak by the GM, but there were witnesses and she decided to roll with it, especially when I announced the reason my Fighter 2 was switching to Monk 1 (at level 3), was because she found a new path, and renounced all material possessions to take a Vow of Poverty (q.v. Book of Exalted Deeds).

Fiction Friday - TitanLil - the broken remnants of Titanium Lilly

TitanLil (formerly Titanium Lilly)

Terrible things can happen to even the most stalwart mind after being held prisoner for a year by a psychotic torturer who revels in forcing his victims to consume their own flesh in order to avoid worse torments.

It would be unkind and wrong to describe Lilly's mind as merely "damaged." What's left today is definitely cunning, and cruel, but more alien than human.

(see also this post for my speculation on this freaky-ass image)

TitanLil - Villains & Vigilantes

Strength 24, Endurance 33, Intelligence 15, Agility 13, Charisma 11, 120 lbs., level 6

Basic Hits 3; Hit Mod. (2.0) (4.2) (1.2) (1.3) = 13.104; Hit Points 39; Power 85; Move 70" ground; Accuracy +1; Damage Mod. +1; Heal 3.0; Detect Hidden 8%; Detect Danger 12%; Carrying Capacity 1027 lbs.; Basic HTH 1d10

Metal Summoning (Ice Powers) (x2): Identical to Ice Powers, but material does not "melt"; instead it persists automatically for E turns (PR=5, no action, to buy another E turns). The metal encasing a target does damage per turn by weight, crushing pressure (being too tight and constrictive) and spikes/rough edges on the interior.
She has trained and reduced the PR cost of this power to PR=3 per use (and PR=3 for maintenance).

Heightened Endurance B: +20

Heightened Senses: Just as she can see light, she can automatically detect all ferrous metals, quantity and type, within C/3 inches (round up). She only has to pay attention and she knows.

Heightened Strength A: +10

Magnetic Powers: She has trained and reduced the PR cost of this power to PR=3 per use (and PR=3 for maintenance).

Sidekick: An apparently normal 14 year-old boy named Yun.  How he got connected to TitanLil has not been revealed. Their relationship is weird, and dynamic, but he appears to worship her, even as he is terrified of her.  He is definitely her servant, and he usually correctly interprets her wishes. He helps her dress, bathe, and acts as her mouthpiece, speaking because she doesn't.  He sometimes appears to be listening to something no one else can hear, as if she is talking to him.  He appears afraid of her, even though she has never been observed to hurt him. In fact, she once destroyed an Intercrime base after TitanLil found out that an agent punched Yun in the head during a training exercise.

Diminished Senses: She only has one eye. -4 "to hit" with all ranged attacks, and -4% Detection rolls.

Lowered Intelligence: -6.  Her mind is shattered, and her behavior often appears alien.  The only telepath known to have tried reading her shattered mind said "What's left is definitely human, and that makes it worse!" before he stunned the interviewers and fled, getting lost somewhere in undeveloped China.

Willpower:  The insanity that drives her makes her physically and mentally more resilient.  She can use this for variable benefits, and also defense. PR=1 per use as defense.

Mute:  She never talks. It is unrevealed if this is a physical, or mental, deformity.
